Call for Proposals: Help Shape a New Asynchronous Oral History Course (Due June 1)

Deadline to Submit: June 1, 2026

The Oral History Association Council calls for proposals from OHA members to create a new asynchronous oral history teaching module via Udemy. The course and the themes for the essential sessions to be available in the curricula are as follows:

Archiving & Preserving

  • Can include the creation of an independent archive and/or partnering with libraries or other archival institutions

Deliverables

  • Can include transcription, photographs, and even public programming

Interviewing

  • May include virtual interviewing strategies

Legal & Ethical Issues

  • Should include legal releases

Project Planning

  • Could include tips for grant writing

Recording Equipment

  • Should include audio, video, and concerns for in-person vs. virtual interviews

Each proposal should address a specific session in the course and describe its anticipated learning outcomes. In a one page narrative prospective instructors should explain how they would present the subject matter, what resources they would utilize, what readings, if any, they would assign, and how they would engage an asynchronous audience. Proposals should reflect the OHA Principles and Best Practices and will be evaluated by a committee of OHA leadership & members. Submit here!

Applicants must also provide a cv/resume that includes any relevant teaching experiences. Prospective instructors may submit proposals for more than one class but our goal is to have six different instructors so only one proposal per instructor will ultimately be selected.

The finished session video should be from 1.5 to 2 hours in length and be accompanied by an annotated bibliography of no more than ten books/articles. Chosen creators will be paid $500 for the final recordings. The course will be made available to the public for a fee and students will receive a certificate upon completion of all six sessions in the course.
Proposals are due by Monday, June 1st. For questions please review the FAQ and/or contact Alissa Rae Funderburk at alissa.funderburk@jsums.edu.
