I have a PhD in American Studies from Brown University, specializing in mid-20th-century US civil rights and social justice movements. I have written several books on the practice and interpretation of oral history methods. I have also taught oral history research methods to undergraduate and graduate students. My approach to oral history is to allow stories to unfold authentically through conversational interviews. I believe that, from a social justice standpoint, teachers and scholars are most effective when they cede power to the greatest degree possible and listen carefully to what needs to be heard.
Specialty
I am particularly interested in LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities and their intersections, and I am eager to work with nonprofit organizations serving these communities to make sure that the history of public-serving community-based organizations is recorded. I am also available as an Academic Coach to people navigating higher education, especially those interested in using oral history research methods.
