Collecting and managing oral history resources created by women and LGBTQ communities can pose unique challenges for curators and archivists. Serious custodianship of these materials requires an evaluation of risk within an ethical framework where archival empathy, of necessity for the safety of the participants, including the archive, must play a role. Laura Micham and Craig Breaden, of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University, will discuss ethical questions related to collecting, preserving, and providing access to oral histories at the Rubenstein Library, through the lens of three collections: The Re-Imagining Collection; the Abortion Clinic Worker Oral History Project; and the Southern Lesbian-Feminist Activist Herstory Project.

Laura Micham (she/her) is the Director, Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture, and Curator, Gender and Sexuality History Collections, at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University.  Laura helps to acquire, preserve, and promote the use of a wide range of rare and unique materials related to women, gender, and sexuality. Her particular interests include feminist activism and theory, reproductive justice, health, and rights, and the history and culture of LGBTQ communities.

Craig Breaden is the Audiovisual Archivist at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library.  Along with management of audiovisual resources across the Library’s wide variety of collections, Craig advises colleagues and students on creating and archiving oral histories.
