R. Scott Hanson

Drexel University
My training and practice of oral history began as a researcher for the Pluralism Project at Harvard University after doing my M.A. in Religion at Columbia University. For the Pluralism Project, I recorded dozens of interviews with leaders and laypeople associated with places of worship in immigrant communities all over the New York City that I would continue later for my dissertation on Flushing, Queens. I gained more experience in audio recording and preservation when I worked as an office manager for legendary folklorist Alan Lomax and the Association for Cultural Equity. My training in oral history continued during my doctoral work at the University of Chicago in sociology and anthropology, and finally at the Center for Oral History Research at Columbia as an Exchange Scholar.
