University of Maryland College Park
I am a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Maryland, College Park. My interests include oral history, the modern British Empire, citizenship, the history of lawlessness, and post-1945 immigration. I have been involved in oral history work since investigating the lives of Caribbean migrants to Britain and the United States for Bonds of Empire. West Indians and Britishness from Victoria to Decolonization (Oxford, 2011) and served on the board of OHMAR (Oral History Association of the Mid Atlantic) from 2015-2021. At UMD I teach oral history & immigration classes in which students interview DMV (DC/MD/VA) residents who have immigrated from all over the world. I coordinate their interviews and transcripts for the Archive of Immigrant Voices Oral History Project at UMDs Center for Global Migration Studies.

Experience

PhD in British/Empire History. Research focus on Black British history/migrants in the 20th century UK and the Caribbean. Teaching focus on empire, nature of lawlessness, oral history & immigrants to U.S. from throughout the world to Washington DC area from mid-20th century to present.

Specialty

A major focus of my work is to help capture the voices and stories of immigrants & migrants from all over the world so they can be shared with both researchers and the broader public. Since 2015 I have guided undergraduate students in conducting oral histories with immigrants in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area. I work with them as they transcribe and analyze their interviews and present their findings. I also prepare their interviews to be housed in the Archive of Immigrant Voices, and through that be made available to the public, as part of the University of Maryland's Center for Global Migration Studies.
