Oral History Office Internship, Summer 2024 – Hagley Museum and Library

Application Consideration Opens March 18, 2024

Hagley’s Oral History Office manages a growing collection of interviews covering a range of topics, from daily life along the Brandywine River, to the history of synthetic textile production, to mushroom farming in Chester County, Pennsylvania, to medical imaging and other industries.  Many of these interviews have never been transcribed or indexed, making their contents difficult to access.  The Oral History Office is currently working to improve the accessibility of these collections for both scholars and the wider public, through digitization, indexing, and transcription.

The Internship
This 2024 summer internship will focus on processing recently digitized and born-digital audio recordings of oral history interviews.  Duties include listening to the interviews and using the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS) to create timecode indexes, keywords, and subject headings for each audio file.  These indexes will be made accessible, along with the interviews themselves, through Hagley’s Digital Archive, allowing researchers and the public to review and search the contents of the interviews more effectively. The intern will also proofread transcripts.  The intern may also join the Oral History Program Manager on new oral history interviews. Current collecting projects include: The Women in Enterprise Project, Triton Biosciences, and Conrail.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have experience with oral history practices and interview processing, including indexing oral history interviews using OHMS.  A general familiarity with metadata standards is also desirable.

Terms
This summer internship will entail 350 hours of service to be completed by October 31st at the latest.  The rate is $19 per hour.  Applications will be reviewed starting March 18th until the internship is filled.  Hagley Museum and Library is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.  Women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
